A partner channel needs three parts, not a logo
A technology partnership becomes a growth channel only when relationship, commercial model, and a customer workflow exist at the same time.
You can collect logos forever. You can sign a memorandum. You can announce a pairing. None of that is a channel. A channel produces sourced or influenced pipeline you can put on a forecast. That only happens when three things exist together: a person on both sides, a way to make money together, and a workflow a customer can run.
Miss one and the rest collapse. A relationship without a commercial model is unpaid friendship. A commercial model without a workflow is a fee on air. A workflow without a relationship is a side project nobody sells. This is why so many tech partnerships stall, which we covered in why tech partnerships fail.
Large platforms encode the same three parts, even when they use different words. AWS Partners asks you to build on a surface, meet a bar, and later earn GTM help. A strategic alliance at the top of the market still needs owners, economics, and a product customers touch. The pattern transfers. The names do not.
The 60-second version
- Relationship: named owners, a next meeting, trust that moves a deal.
- Commercial model: referral, co-sell, or revenue share a seller can explain in one sentence.
- Workflow: a plugin, API, or shared job the customer can complete without a spreadsheet.
- Build all three. Shipping one without the others is how you get a press release or unpaid engineering.
Relationship is a person, not a portal
Portals are filing cabinets. Partnerships start when someone will take the meeting, route the intro, and keep a next step. If the only owner is a generic inbox, you do not have a relationship. You have a ticket.
Commercial model is a sentence, not a spreadsheet
If a field rep cannot say how they get paid, they will not mention you. Revenue sharing is one option. Referral fees are another. Co-sell credits are a third. Pick the one you can actually run this quarter. See revenue share vs referral fees if you are still choosing.
Workflow is the product of the pairing
Auth, a webhook, a marketplace listing: those are surfaces. The product is the job. Two records that stay in sync. A trigger that fires. A status both systems trust. Without that, co-sell has nothing to attach to a deal. Marketplace surfaces such as the Atlassian Marketplace exist so a customer can install that job in a stack they already pay for.
