Run a partner channel before you hire a partner manager
A hire without a method spends a year in decks. Rank the book, agree a motion, ship one workflow, then hire someone to run what already exists.
Hiring a partner manager is the default answer to an empty partners page. It is also how you buy a year of decks. A new hire cannot invent a channel and run it at the same time. They need a shortlist, a motion, and a live workflow, or they will spend the ramp producing artifacts that look like work.
We wrote about the role itself in hiring a partner manager and when to hire partnerships. This post is the sequence: build a thin channel first, then hire to operate it. That is cheaper than paying someone to discover the method from zero, and it is kinder to the person you hire.
Ecosystems will not wait for your headcount. Public paths on AWS Partners and Shopify Partners are designed so a small team can list a working product. Use that. A strategic alliance with a dedicated manager on both sides comes later, if it comes at all.
The 60-second version
- Do not hire to create the channel. Hire to run a channel that already has a pairing in production.
- Before the hire: ranked shortlist, one seller sentence, one live workflow.
- A 90-day build is often cheaper than nine months of ramp plus a fully loaded salary.
- The hire then has something to QBR, not a blank CRM and a logo slide.
What "thin channel" means
Not twenty partners. One to three pairings a customer can run, a motion you can pay, and a report you can show. That is enough for a first hire to inherit. More than that before the hire is usually fake scale.
