The US market for this seat is loud and sloppy. Hundreds of postings say “partner manager.” Many are BD with a nicer title. Some are real: a book, a commercial motion, a workflow to ship. Your job is to tell them apart, then show up with work.
This lesson is a week of work, not a pep talk. If you only read it, you did not take it.
What “tech partner manager” means in US postings
Three families hide under the same words.
Technology / ISV / ecosystem. You will scope integrations, listings, and a referral or co-sell motion. Look for: marketplace, AppExchange, HubSpot, Shopify, API, “attached ARR.”
Channel / alliances. You will run resellers, SIs, or a cloud co-sell. Look for: ACE, Partner Advantage, GSI, “sourced pipeline.”
Brand / community “partnerships.” Events, sponsors, creators. Fine work. Not this academy’s job. Skip unless you want that week.
Exercise 1. Open ten live US postings. Sort them into the three families. Keep five from the first two. Delete the rest from your list.
Where the seats actually are
US hiring for this role clusters in:
- Series B to D SaaS with a marketplace they are late to
- Platforms (CRM, commerce, cloud, identity) hiring ISV or technology partner managers
- Product-led companies whose CS tickets name the same five tools every week
- Agencies and studios that run the motion for several products (including PartnerMatch, which hires into the agency, not a freelance pool)
Remote-US is common. “Remote, US only” usually means payroll and time zones, not “optional office.” If the posting says New York or SF with no remote line, believe the office.
Exercise 2. Pick three companies you would take a call from. For each, write: family of seat, likely reporting line (sales, product, CEO), and one integration you would ship in 90 days. Use their public site and the directory.
The packet US hiring managers actually open
A US partner-manager screen is a working session pretending to be an interview. Bring:
- One-page case. Before, what you did, what shipped, the number. If you have never held the title, use a pairing from a product you use. Honesty plus a sharp artifact beats fake global alliances.
- A scored list of five partners for their product, not a generic TAM. Three yes, two no, with the no written down.
- A one-pager PDF for the top yes.
- A 90-day plan on one page: map, one ship, a kill list.
- A no story. A partnership you refused, or would refuse, and why.
Exercise 3. Build that packet this week for one of your three companies. Time-box the scored list to 90 minutes. If it takes longer, you are decorating.
How to read the posting without lying to yourself
Circle: hunt, farm, program. Hunt is BD. Farm is partner management. Program is alliances on a platform.
If they want all three in year one, the seat is undefined. You can still take it. Go in knowing you will pick one muscle first.
Ask, in writing if you have to:
- Who owns the integration backlog
- How many engineering weeks exist this quarter for partners
- What happened to the last partnership that died
- How you will be measured in two quarters (live integrations and active connections, or logos)
If they cannot answer, the job will punish you for doing the real work.
Exercise 4. Draft six interview questions you will ask. Put the engineering-window question first.
Applications that get a reply
Volume of identical applications is how you train yourself to be ignored.
For each of the five postings:
- First paragraph: their product, the workflow you would start with, the motion (referral / co-sell / listing). Two sentences.
- Attach the one-pager, not a 12-page ecosystem vision.
- Subject or LinkedIn note: “90-day plan for [their category] partnerships,” not “passionate about ecosystems.”
US recruiters search titles. If your current title is CS or AE, say the partnerships work in the first bullet, not only in a cover letter they will not read.
Exercise 5. Send two applications with unique first paragraphs. Do not send the third until you have rewritten the first paragraph from scratch.
The take-home
They may ask for a 90-day plan or a one-pager overnight. Keep it short. One workflow, one motion, one ship, a kill list. If you write a 15-page vision, you failed the test they did not know they were running.
Use the partner fit and GTM picker as worksheets. Paste the result into an appendix of five lines, not a dashboard.
Offers
A US offer for this seat often has a variable. Ask how much is sourced vs influenced, and what happens if product slips the only integration that could produce it. A quota with no engineering window is a trap.
Base should make the seat survivable if the channel is slow. Do not be shy. Serious companies respect it.
Exercise 6. Write the two key results you would accept in writing. Keep them in the notes app you open before you say yes.
If you are not in the US
This lesson is still the packet. The difference is payroll, visa, and which postings say “US only.” Do not hide that. Apply where the posting allows it. The work in the packet does not change.
What not to do
Do not buy a partnerships certificate. Do not wait for a course with video. Do not send a CV of slogans. Do not apply to forty logos this week with the same paragraph.
Do the six exercises. Date the packet. That is how you get the seat.
